Drawings of a French Musketeer and Hussar

Artist
Jean-Louis-Ernest Meissonier
French
1815–1891

This small sheet, which bears Meissonier's estate stamp, features drawings on both sides. The figure on the stamped side appears to be a study for a portrait of a musketeer now in the Hermitage Museum. The reverse side bears a very faint inscription, "1807" indicating its relationship to Meissonier's most famous painting, 1807, Friedland, which hangs in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Close inspection reveals it to be a study for one of the riders in the far left foreground. A very closely related drawing is held bywhoa the National Gallery of Art.
